Dr Cañete, from the Quirónsalud Toledo Hospital, gives a masterclass in Vietnam on radiofrequency treatment for uterine fibroids

A select group of fifty Vietnamese gynaecologists attended the masterclass held in the Tu Du Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City.

The event included a presentation and live demonstration of this technique, of which Dr Cañete is an leading international expert

Last Saturday, Mª Luisa Cañete Palomo, an obstetrician and gynaecologist from the Quirónsalud Toledo Hospital, gave a masterclass on the conservative treatment of uterine fibroids at the Tu Du Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, the most populated city in Vietnam, using radio frequency needles developed by RF Medical and distributed in Spain by Cardiva.

A select group of 50 gynaecologists from across the country attended the masterclass, during which Dr Cañete focused on three clinical cases of anaemic patients with fibroids who required a transfusion.

The day concluded with a presentation given by Dr Cañete on conservative fibroid treatment, which was translated simultaneously into Vietnamese. Finally, the doctors visiting Tu Du Hospital, Vietnam’s largest maternity department, had the chance to ask questions and share their opinions about the treatment.

Uterine fibroids are benign (non-cancerous) tumours made up of fibres that are very similar to uterine tissue. It is estimated that 70% of women develop fibroids throughout their life, with a higher incidence in over 50s. These women are usually asymptomatic and do not require treatment. However, sometimes different types of symptoms can arise which affect the patient’s quality of life and fertility.

There are various treatments, depending on the size, location symptomatology, and vascularity of the fibroid. Radiofrequency offers a significant improvement in the treatment of this condition as it is a minimally invasive technique that does not require surgery, thereby preventing surgical risks, facilitating the patient’s quick recovery, and preserving their fertility.

Dr Cañete is the author of several fibroid treatment protocols for the Spanish Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and a leading international figure in the use of this technique.

Course in Madrid

Dr Cañete also presented radiofrequency ablation for the treatment of uterine fibroids at the Advanced and Interventional Gynaecological Ultrasound Training Course held on 22 March in Madrid, co-organised by La Paz University Hospital and 12 De Octubre University Hospital.
