Hospital iontophoresis: Dupel blue electrodes

Empi Dupel B.L.U.E.™ iontophoresis electrodes (ultra-electrode with two layers). The Empi iontophoresis electrode set consists of a bi-layer buffer electrode for drug delivery (with different sizes that indicate the approximate filling volumes) and a self-adhesive buffering return electrode. The pH balance electrode is a patented buffer that adjusts the pH of the medication to a safe level (pH 4-8) without introducing competing ions that decrease medication delivery. This allows maximum flexibility and safety when selecting a medication. Its highly efficient bi-layer design allows optimal medication delivery without any type of adverse effect.

Dupel B.L.U.E™ provides healthcare professionals and patients with improved efficiency, comfort and ease of use thanks to a better adherence and adaptability. The Iono Base + device is a galvanic or direct current (DC) generator for use with Dupel Blue electrodes in iontophoresis treatment, providing transfer for the use of the electrodes.

Product technical information

Each packet of electrodes contains: a self-adhesive drug administration electrode and a return electrode (DISPOSABLE – NON-STERILE).

These must be kept at room temperature away from direct sunlight.

Quantity per box: 12 packets per box.

In accordance with the federal law of the USA, this device can only be sold by or on the order of a physician. A dosage of 80 mA· min must not be exceeded with these electrodes.

Iontophoresis drug administration systems are indicated for the local administration of ionic drug solutions into the body for medical purposes and may be used as an alternative to injections.


The use in individuals that have had known adverse reactions to the application of electric current. The use with cardiac pacemakers or other implanted devices sensitive to electricity. The use in individuals that display a known sensitivity to the drugs that are going to be administered. The fitting of the electrodes on or close to the orbital region.


Keep the device out of the reach of children. Do not use these electrodes with any other iontophoresis device or for any other purpose. Their risk-free use has only been tested with the Dupel® iontophoresis system. Do not allow any of the metallic or black parts of the electrode to come into direct contact with the skin during treatment. Do not apply the electrodes to broken or injured skin (for example, sunburn, cuts or acne) since this could increase the risk of a cutaneous reaction. Do not apply the electrodes in such a way that the current crosses the heart or brain since safety in these cases has not been tested. Do not use any electrode that has been previously used since these electrodes have been manufactured for a single use. Reusing it could cause the patient burns. Examine the electrodes before using them. Dispose of any electrode that shows signs of alteration or damage since using these electrodes could be dangerous.


So as to establish good contact between the electrode and the skin, excess hair may be cut, but DO NOT SHAVE the skin. Shaving the skin can produce cuts that are not easily seen, which could increase the risk of adverse cutaneous reactions. Tell the patient to report any undue sensation of pain or burning during the treatment. If this happens, interrupt the treatment and examine the electrode application area to see if a cutaneous reaction has occurred. On rare occasions, the iontophoresis therapy can cause transient cutaneous reactions, such as rashes, inflammation, irritation or burns. These cutaneous reactions can be the result of individual sensitivity to the ionic solution used, the condition of the skin at the start of the treatment, a reaction to the electrode materials or a poor connection between the electrode and the patient’s skin. Warn the patient of this possibility before starting the treatment. If a cutaneous reaction occurs, interrupt the treatment and consult the prescribing physician. Sometimes a transient erythematous reaction can occur, characterised by a uniform red colouration directly below one or both of the electrodes. Normally, the reddening disappears less than 12 hours after the treatment. Warn the patient of this possibility before starting the treatment. Before giving an iontophoresis treatment, consult the instructions for the drug that is going to be administered; read the indications, contraindications and warnings associated with its use. Excessive movement once the electrodes have been fitted can cause insufficient contact between the skin and the electrode or the uneven distribution of the current, which could produce sudden changes in the sensation of the current or an adverse cutaneous reaction. Remove the electrodes or controllers during magnetic resonance procedures since the metal could heat up and cause burns in the electrode area. Warn your patient that they should remove any type jewellery that could come into contact with the electrode.

Preparation instructions

  1. Inspect the area where the electrodes are going to applied and make sure that the area is clean and that the skin is intact. For greater comfort, a cleaning wipe is included.
  2. With an appropriate graduated syringe, aspirate the indicated quantity of solution on the electrode carrying sheet. The use of a needle is neither required nor recommended to fill the treatment electrode.   3. The carrying sheet has a convenient opening to fill the electrode. With a circular movement, fully saturate the whole surface of the pad. Do not excessively fill the electrode.
  4. Separate the treatment electrode from the carrying sheet. Apply it directly to the area to be treated and stick it down by pressing around the adhesive edge so that the whole edge of the electrode is well sealed. The adhesive tape can be lightly stretched to make fitting easier. DO NOT apply pressure to the pad since this could cause a loss of the solution.
  5. Remove the return electrode from the carrying sheet. Lightly moisten the adhesive side of the return electrode with water (1 or 2 drops) before applying it to the skin. Do not excessively moisten it since this could reduce the capacity of the electrode to adhere to the skin. Apply it to an important muscle, a minimum of 10 cm (4 inches) from the treatment electrode, on the same side of the body. Do not apply the return electrode in a bony area.
  6. Make sure that the iontophoresis device is disconnected (OFF) and then connect the conductor wires to the electrodes, following the iontophoresis device instructions.
  7. Adjust the program and therapy to be received by the patient and follow the iontophoresis device instructions to perform the treatment.
